Become a TEDx Speaker

Summer Course:

July 10 – August 28, 2018

Have you dreamed of speaking on the TED or TEDx stage, but haven’t gotten there yet?

Speaking on the TED or TEDx stage is a big deal. It’s an incredible vehicle for you as a female thought leader to spread your message, grow your influence and share what matters to you most. It’s also an awesome way for you to disrupt the status quo and shift cultural consciousness to new ways of thinking and doing things that could better everyone’s lives.

Who This Course is For:

  • You’re a female thought leader whose been dreaming about giving a TED or TEDx talk forever, but haven’t done anything about it.
  • You have a few ideas for a TED talk, but can’t seem to settle on one, so you’re stuck.
  • You’ve taken some initial steps to become a TED or TEDx speaker, but then self-doubt got the best of you, so you backslid.
  • You know you are meant to speak from the TED or TEDx stage, but are struggling with some visibility issues and owning your space on the stage.
  • You’ve watched a ton of TED/TEDx talks, and every time you watch one, you think: I should be up there.

My TEDx Story:

As a budding female thought leader having just watched Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s TED Talk “Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders,” I knew I wanted to be on that stage myself. I had an idea that I wanted to share, but questioned whether I was really “ready” to be on the TED stage. This was in 2011.

Then I learned about TEDx events. These are locally organized TED-style events organized in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” They are planned and coordinated independently in different communities around the world, under a free license by TED. The organizers are advised to look for emerging local voices, and since TEDx events are happening on a much more frequent basis than main stage TED, they are the easier path to entry. I was sold. This would be my route to the stage.

What did I do about this?

Nothing. (Except dream about giving my talk.) I wanted to give a TEDx talk, but I wasn’t taking action on it. I knew I had something important to share that could help shift consciousness for the better, but every time I’d have an opportunity to work on my talk or pursue an introduction to a TEDx organizer, I’d stall and procrastinate, and tell myself I wasn’t ready yet. On and on this went. For years. You know the drill, right?

The truth was that I was struggling with visibility issues. I was terrified to get up there on this big, influential stage in the spotlight on that infamous red circle rug and share my idea that would challenge the status quo and “out” me for my true beliefs and philosophy. I was afraid people would think I was loony tunes and that I was coloring too far outside of the lines. Would people understand what I was trying to say? Or would they just stare at me blankly like I was from another planet. This was a big fear of mine.

This went on for awhile. Until it became too painful to not share my message. Fortunately for me, the Universe had my back. In the Spring of 2015, a TEDx speaking opportunity came my way. A distinguished alumna from my alma mater contacted me to let me know that our former school was hosting it’s first TEDx event and she thought I’d be a great speaker. By the time she contacted me, she had already recommended me to the powers that be, and all I had to do now was to fill out an application to show my interest. At this point, I could not turn down or stall on this opportunity staring me in the face. I had to get over myself and my fears and apply. So I did.

Two weeks later, I received a congratulatory letter letting me know that I had been selected as a speaker at TEDxStMarksSchool, a boarding school based outside of Boston, MA. I would be speaking amongst the former CEO of Apple, John Sculley, the president and CEO of the Mayo Clinic (and neuroscientist) John Noseworthy, a leader in the field of cancer immunology research, Dr. Michael Jensen, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ron Suskind, science professor at MIT Dr. Lindy Elkins, a former governor of New Jersey, and more.

Why I teach this course:

As it turns out, I was 1 of only 3 women speakers at my TEDx event. There were 11 speakers total. Do the math. This gender disparity was exasperating to me. We were speaking to an audience that 50/50 women and men (including students), so why were women so underrepresented as speakers?

I began to dig into this and found out that women represented only 15% of the recommended speakers at TED, and only 20% of the recommended TEDx talks for TED.com.

The reasons given by one TED producer were: 1) Women are harder to find. 2) Women are more likely to say “no” than men. 3) Women were slightly more likely to cancel than men.

At that moment, I vowed to do my part to make sure these reasons for why there are so few women speakers on the TED stage could never be cited again. And so began my teaching of this course. Welcome!

Tabby walked me through an important transformation. One that was required for me to truly impact the world in the way I am able to. She helped me to formulate a topic for my TEDx talk that is relevant to the world, and that also aligns with the way I want to shift world economy. Without her, I am not sure I would have gotten as specific, nor would I have pushed myself in the direction that my talk went. Her constant revisions, feedback, and the space she held for this was top-notch. I am beyond grateful for her attention to detail, and her devotion to facilitating the voice of women on national and international platforms. The TEDx course provided all the pieces for me to bring forth My Idea Worth Spreading.”

Amelia-Pawlak“This course has been deeply healing and has helped me remember who I AM. I now feel confident in putting myself out on a larger – world – stage. When the course started, I was excited, but then started to get cold-feet – and thought, ‘What the hell am I doing? I don’t need to give a TEDx talk – really, I don’t. It’ll be too much to take on and I just don’t have the energy.’ But I committed wholeheartedly and trusted Tabby to take me on the journey. I’m so glad I did because the inner growth I experienced has been life-changing! I traversed light years with Tabby’s support and encouragement. Hiding is no longer acceptable – and I feel empowered to speak using “my voice.” I now know my voice matters and feel confident I can present on a TEDx stage. I also felt empowered to take action (and did!) in other areas where I’d been stalling for years.  The class was incredibly rich with content, and Tabby’s love and wholehearted support were ever-present. I feel fantastic and now trust and know I am on my way to taking my rightful place in the world. Thank you for all you do to empower me and other women, Tabby. You are a gift of inestimable value to me and the world.”

julia-huffmanTabby helped me immensely to find my voice. What an inspiration to work with her! Before beginning our work together, I didn’t feel confident in writing my TEDx talk. It felt daunting and like I needed a road map that I didn’t have. As Tabby and I worked together, I started feeling more confidence in my storytelling, and eventually I was able to discover those authentic parts of myself that needed to be brought into the light. I also discovered there is a pace and rhythm to storytelling and delivering a compelling talk. Tabby’s soulful guidance and focus is felt deeply. I now feel a deeper sense of confidence in my abilities to write and tell my story. I feel empowered in my femaleness and that my idea is important and valuable to the world!”

Jackie-VanCampen“This course has been so transformational. It’s one of the greatest investments I’ve made! I’m feeling 100 percent more confident about speaking on a TEDx stage, as well as other stages. Being able to write my talk and have Tabby offer such crystal clear guidance was so very powerful for me. When I started the course, I wasn’t 100 percent clear on my talk. After being stuck in my writing, Tabby ever so wisely saw exactly what my talk was about, and my whole talk just flowed right out of me! Tabby has a special ability to clearly see someone’s story and help them see it, too. Ever since she helped me unravel my talk, things became so clear, and I noticed myself feeling more confident and believing in myself at a new level. I also became more committed to myself and my goals. I now have a signature talk that I can use as a basis to speak at any women’s event, as well as a solid TEDx talk and the resources to get on the TEDx stage. I couldn’t be more grateful to Tabby for seeing what I had not been able to see and getting me out of the mud of uncertainty and self-doubt. I’m just so happy I joined this program. Thank you so much, Tabby, for this amazing course! I learned so much.”

Kali-Ashura“This has been one of the most beneficial trainings that I have signed up for. The weekly sessions, assignments, sisterhood, and you were exceptional. Before starting the course, I had a general idea about my message, but needed to hone in on the details of it and the elements of presentation. I also had some fears around public speaking, thinking that I  was not qualified and that somehow my voice was not important. During the course, I grew more confident in not only who I am as a person, but in my overall message. I became clearer about “my voice” and how it fits into the larger societal picture. I realized that I was playing small, still hiding. Tabby gently pushed me to stand up and speak up. I am now very clear that my message and, more importantly, who I am, matter. I have something that the world is waiting for and now is my time to bring it onto the TEDx stage. I am walking away from this course with a renewed sense of who I am, and the necessary steps to move forward. I not only know my message, I am an embodiment of it. Tabby was amazing. What she brings to her trainings can only be experienced. This course was well worth the investment, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to develop or expand their message and understanding the ins and outs of being a TEDx presenter.”

Mascha Davis HeadshotI loved working with Tabby to prepare for my TEDx talk. She met me right where I was, and helped me exactly where I needed it to make my talk not only powerful but also authentic and moving. She understood the message I wanted to convey on a very deep level and was able to hone in right on the areas I needed to finesse. I couldn’t be happier with my talk and am so grateful for the support that Tabby provided. It boosted my confidence and helped me to believe that I could deliver an ama

Zinnia Gupte“Tabby has been an amazing force of light on this journey of claiming our voice and feminine authority. When I first joined the class, I was scared, terrified even. All my worst fears came up to haunt me and I thought I would go silent again like I have been for so many years. But something different happened this time. With Tabby, I had a coach, a friend, a mentor, a lioness shaking me to my core, waking me up, helping to remember that I am a force and I have here to speak my truth and let it shine in the world. In eight weeks, I conquered my fear, wrote draft after draft, cried, felt frustrated and came out of the journey not only with a final draft of my TEDx speech, but with a life-long mentor and friend, a sisterhood of feminine leaders and the courage and confidence to step up to any stage, any platform without the fear of rejection. I have been applying to multiple speaking opportunities and women’s conferences because of my training with Tabby. It’s not just TEDx training, it’s training for life!”

catherine-gray“I am feeling much stronger with my voice, and I’m ready to get on the TEDx stage! Before the course, I knew I wanted to do a TED Talk, but didn’t know where to begin. During the course, the exercises and assignments Tabby provided helped me get clear on my topic, decide on which stories to tell, and gave me a strategy to write my talk. She also helped me feel more comfortable with being vulnerable. Tabby is great with feedback and suggestions, and has a gift of clarity for what TEDx organizers are looking for in these talks. She also provided great advice on how to approach getting booked as a speaker. I’m now feeling really good about my talk and am looking forward to getting on the TEDx stage. I love what Tabby is doing. I know she will help a lot of women fill the void of women speakers on TED and TEDx stages. We need that!”

Karynne Boese“Thank you Tabby for being a fearless leader of love and freedom! Your love and generosity of spirit are gorgeous. Thank you for showing up and giving your courageous heart, creating the space and teaching this class. I bow to you with respect and deep honor and a lot of love and joy. I am so grateful I took this course.”

Claudia Gomez“I’m so happy to be part of this powerful group of women who are unapologetically taking the stage. Thank you Tabby for fanning our flames! Before the course, I was challenged by the fear of nervousness, which happens during public speaking. During the course, Tabby provided me with tips and tools and different ways of thinking that transformed the energy to benefit my talk. As we worked together, I got clearer on my message and how it can help change the world. As a result of the course, I feel much more confident and prepared to take any stage, and as a consequence, feel very comfortable speaking about my subject with anyone I meet. Thank you Tabby. You are rocking the house out there.”

– Claudia Gomez, Mother, Advocate for Women’s History in Early Childhood Education

Sonali Fiske“Tabby, is such a nurturing and loving presence – without her belief in me, her trust in her own inner-guidance to take a chance on me, there is no way I would be standing in my strength, my message today. Before starting the course, I was struggling with organizing my thoughts in a sequential, organized way and also struggling with limiting beliefs and fears that my message wasn’t strong enough, good enough or valuable for the TEDx stage. During the course, I received so much valuable support and inspiration from the sisterhood and Tabby! The feedback and positive comments often dispelled the fears and negative self-talk throughout this process. I began to trust in my particular direction to help immigrant/refugee/transnational women have a more visible role in our society and in leadership. Most notably, I grew much more confident. The course helped me think bigger, helped affirm that I am on the right track and that I can continue to raise the intensity of my voice with this message for the world. I have a talk ready to go now, and am so utterly grateful for all of the support, guidance and advice I received. The results of this course will help me for years to come. Thank you Tabby for your generous heart and for your trust in me. You are a gift to this world.”

– Sonali Fiske, Leadership Coach & Mentor to Immigrant Transnational, Refugee Women

“Tabby is the woman you want in your corner if you are wanting to give a TEDx talk, or any other transformational talk. She will support you to find your message and step into who you are as a thought leader through the preparation of the talk. She will also help you with your application process. Tabby seriously just impresses me every time I connect with her. She is a woman who owns her voice and her opinions, and has no fear or lack of courageousness when it comes to wisely sharing that beautiful voice. Tabby stands so fully for the divine feminine and for women finding their true power; if you don’t know her, I HIGHLY recommend getting to know her.”
